We are looking for a driven and relentless Devops & Security Engineer

Are you a highly driven and result-oriented Devops & Security Engineer with hands-on experience in building or supporting scalable and high-quality digital products and features? If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at Chaos Theory.

As a Senior Devops & Security Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and securing our complex backend systems, working closely with backend and frontend engineers to design and implement efficient and reliable solutions that deliver exceptional user experiences. But more than that, we are seeking a results-oriented individual who is eager to coach and mentor team members, helping them grow both professionally and personally.

At Chaos Theory, we operate at the forefront of sports, entertainment, and cryptocurrency, and we are growing rapidly. Your contributions will be critical to our success, and we want you to be able to say, "I am consistently driving results that exceed expectations, and my work is directly contributing to the kind of growth that most companies can only dream of."

If you are a hands-on problem solver with strong project management and communication skills and a buzzword-resistant mindset that prioritizes outcomes above all else, we invite you to apply. Together, let's create user experiences that drive behavior and emotions and contribute to the kind of growth that sets us apart.

Let’s make that happen together.

A Day In The Life

As a Senior Engineer in Devops & Security at Chaos Theory, your typical day might look like this:

Your morning commences with a team meeting, focused on setting priorities and addressing any blockers. Following this, you pair up with a colleague to investigate an intriguing false positive in intrusion detection at PII endpoints. A service from the sports team, erroneously hit a PII endpoint to get otherwise unrelated customer data in our architecture – a simple yet insightful resolution that will be immediately addressed.

Next, you shift your attention to a critical ongoing project: enhancing business continuity. This involves a detailed review of potential scenarios for provider transitions, alongside refining your backup and restore strategies. Your role is crucial in ensuring the company's resilience against unforeseen disruptions.

Throughout the day, collaboration with the data team is key as you work on provisioning AlloyDB as a data lake. This task is integral to aligning technical operations with the company's performance metrics and cost projections.

In the afternoon, you lead a session at the 1025 meeting, an engineering sharing session. Here, you present an updated style guide, explaining the nuances of designing and securing APIs – as you’ve noticed too much variability in approaches and that teams are not aligned with certain approaches. You successfully get buy-in and help ensure we have a sensible approach in the team to common problems and now aligned solutions.

Also, during this session, you share insights from the morning's false positive incident. This avoids repetition of and promotes a culture of vigilance and continuous learning within our team.

Your day concludes with a reflective one-on-one with your manager, where you discuss feedback and set goals for the upcoming quarter. Your forward-thinking approach and dedication to personal and professional growth impresses and moves both you and your line manager forward.

Your passion for collaboration and technical expertise is essential for your success in this role. You're in control, and together with your team, you'll tackle the challenges ahead and help Chaos Theory continue to thrive.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • Curious mindset and open mind to try new infrastructure technologies even if there’s risk of delays as it’s important to stay ahead of the curve.
  • A buzzword-resistant mindset that prioritizes outcomes above all else.
  • Strong desire to understand engineering needs as well as external customers with the ability of turning insights into actions.
  • Programming experience with Typescript/Go etc.
  • Solid problem solving skills in cloud infrastructure (GCP, Cloudflare etc.) and a Get it done attitude
  • Database administration skills for Postgres and MySQL
  • Infra as code (Terraform/Pulumi/AWS CDK etc.)
  • Experience with setting up and proactively managing the sprawl of metrics and logs in observability solutions (Grafana/Datadog etc.)
  • Experience with managing internal and external bug bounty programs and owning the delivery of security bug fixes for bugs found through such programs.
  • Detail oriented as the devil is in the infrastructure details.
  • Strong motivation to look at Infra KPIs such as high uptime, lower costs.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience of microservice architectures, best practices and patterns.
  • Strong project management and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to confidently make technical decisions and prioritize in the best interests of users and the business.
  • Provide technical support to marketing and product teams for implementing marketing tools, including blog setups, website redirects, and SEO optimization.
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written).

It’d be great — but not necessary — if you also had:

  • Hands-on experience mentoring members of an engineering team.
  • Knowledge of fault tolerant engineering practices.
  • Interest in technology, sports, gaming, and cryptocurrencies.

You will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with all engineering teams to ensure seamless operations of our backend services that power the customer experience.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders and the product team to create and execute ambitious product roadmaps that meet user needs and business objectives.
  • Working alongside a team of engineers where you are mentoring team members and peers to ensure we’re continuously learning and sharing knowledge and solutions.
  • Supporting hiring and growing our team as needed, to help with the growth of the organization.

In exchange, we offer:

  • A dynamic, collaborative, fun, yet challenging work environment.
  • Attractive salary and benefits.
  • Premium health insurance for you and your dependents
  • Flexible working hours.
  • An office located in the heart of Central, Hong Kong. Remote workers will be considered.
  • A state-of-the-art entertaining floor, including a fully stocked bar and pantry, gaming consoles, and a growing library.
  • A team of 85 globally, representing over 20 countries — we’re multi-cultural and proud of it!
  • Onsite company gym/yoga studio with showers, changing rooms, and free daily classes.
  • Expensed weekly team lunches a monthly entertainment allowance, and an annual professional development stipend.
  • Company events, including Christmas and Summer parties and our much-loved beach BBQs.

Where you’ll work:

Based out of five floors of office, gym, yoga studio, and entertainment space in Hong Kong’s SoHo district, we work with colleagues around the world to shake things up in one of the most exciting places on the internet today — the digital center of sports, entertainment, and cryptocurrency.

We’d love to have you in Hong Kong or a nearby time zone, but the right person could work anywhere.
